Do I need a secure web site?

Most businesses do not need a secure web site (SSL encrypted). If you accept credit cards or other financial information, you need a secure web site. If you handle sensitive data (such as online file storage, or addresses), or if your customers would prefer a secure web site, you may want to consider SSL.

How can I stop email spam?

You can prevent most spam by only giving your personal email to trusted people. Use an alternative email (such as gmail or yahoo) for web signups.

If you are getting spam use a spam filter (most email programs come with one). If spam is really bad you may wish to set up a second email account that you only give to people you trust.

How do I get a blog / forum / etc.?

There are several blog and forum applications that you can set up on your web site (many are free). You will need a database to use one.

Can I update my own website?

Yes. If you desire to do this, telling us early in the design process can help avoid extra cost. We can discuss what level of involvement you want and design a custom solution.

Can people contact me through my website?

Yes, a web contact form can allow visitors to contact you, while protecting your email address from spam. We always offer a contact form with all web development contracts.

Do you offer a web site maintenance / updating plan?

Yes we do. With our web master account you receive free hosting with us, and includes minor changes, updating text and pictures. We customize each plan to provide exactly what you need.

What steps are involved in getting a web site?

First you need to decide basically what you want your web site to do, detail is not needed, but a business site to sell products is different than a blog to enhance your professional image.

Second you need to get a domain name. This is typically $5 - $25 per year.

Third you need to secure a web host (unless adequate hosting is included with your domain name). Generally note how many email addresses and databases you get, and what (if any) programming languages are available, along with space and bandwidth limits. If you need a secure web site be sure that is supported.

Domain Names

What if the domain name I want is taken?

Many preferred domain names are already taken. It is usually a good idea to find and secure your domain name when you name your business.

You can also visit the domain name, and assess if it might be listed for sale. Then you can perform a whois search to find the owner of the domain, and then contact them about selling.

Another option is to choose a different domain. If .com is taken, how about .us or .biz? Perhaps widgets.com is taken, but widgetsinc.com is available. If you have a difficult choice, print out your options and ask friends or customers what they think is most memorable and logical.

Who owns my domain name?

You own your domain name. It is registered in your name, and should you ever want to transfer it to another domain register,we will help you do that.

Search Engines

How do I get to the first page of google (or another search engine)?

Short Answer: Good content, incoming links, and time.

Longer Answer: The exact workings of each search engine varies, but what is good for your visitors will also help search engines.

Good content contains key words and phrases that your visitors are interested in. So if you teach in music lessons for children, your content should reflect that focus.

The other item you can do is build incoming links. Related web sites, directories and reciprocal links all help make it easier for people and search engines to find your web site.
